Over a full in-studio weekend, plus pre-training readings and a written project, this training delivers immersive Restorative Yoga instruction and practice. We’ll explore the gentlest form of yoga and how it supports overall recuperation and recovery from injury and illness (including stress).
No previous Yoga Teacher Training is required for this course.
Through long-held, highly supported postures, Restorative Yoga allows practitioners to become still, dissolving tension throughout their bodies. The practice shifts the nervous system away from fight, flight, freeze, or fawn, triggering the relaxation response and allowing the body’s recuperative abilities to kick in. Postures are held for up to 30 minutes and use many props to ensure muscles release and the body is able to fully relax.
By removing the focus on ‘doing’, Restorative Yoga allows practitioners to experience ‘being’ - and feel deeply settled and grounded.
While first developed to support people recovering from injury or illness, Restorative Yoga has become popular with anyone looking to complement more active practices and serve as an antidote to a busy life.
What To Expect
Acknowledging that the person holding the pose is the expert on how it feels in their own body, this course provides guidance for creating comfort and easing stress through Restorative Yoga. We’ll look at the overall principles of Restorative Yoga and how the practice and poses meet the needs of individuals. While there are relatively few Restorative Yoga poses, setting them up requires careful attention and their long-held nature means attending to details that can be overlooked with shorter holds and more active practices.
All in-studio days include at least 90-minutes of Restorative Yoga, along with elements of meditation and yoga nidra (yogic sleep or guided relaxation).
Throughout the weekend, we’ll talk about creating safety and holding space. We’ll also explore how best to make adjustments and honor individual student needs, considering how anatomical and energetic differences influence the practice.
On the last afternoon of the course, you’ll teach a mini Restorative Yoga session. Supportive feedback throughout will help you build confidence leading Restorative Yoga classes and building your personal practice.
All students will receive a manual for the training. Students are invited to submit a written/recorded project showing their understanding of Restorative Yoga, which the facilitator will review and provide feedback on.
Having first practiced yoga in a church basement in the late 90s, Laura has carried her yoga mat with her as she’s moved from city to city and country to country. In 2011, while on leave from a stressful corporate job, Laura completed her first yoga teacher training in Vancouver, Canada. She followed that initial education with specialised training in Yin and Restorative Yoga with Paul and Suzee Grilley, Bernie Clark, and Judith Hanson Lasater — and opted not to return to the anxiety-inducing corporate world.
Laura has taught mostly Yin and Restorative Yoga for 15 years as she’s moved from Canada to Denmark, then on to Switzerland and England, before happily resettling in Denmark. Her international exposure brings a sensitivity to individual experiences and an empathetic approach.
Her background in facilitation, training, and communication gives Laura an unflappable teaching style, where humor often floats to the surface. As a lapsed librarian, she believes in investigating every nook and cranny, while respecting the inherent nature of each learner.
Laura treats each class as an escape from the hectic world around us, embracing using props, slowing down, feeling present, and enjoying being rather than doing.
